Gideon, one of the judges of Israel, tested God three times in the Book of Judges to confirm God’s will and strengthen his faith. These tests demonstrate Gideon’s initial hesitation and desire for assurance before leading Israel against the Midianites.

1. The First Test: The Angel and the Offering

  • Scripture Reference: Judges 6:17-21
When God called Gideon to deliver Israel, Gideon asked for a sign to confirm that the message was truly from Him. He prepared an offering of meat, bread, and broth, and the angel of the Lord miraculously consumed the offering with fire from the rock.

This sign assured Gideon that it was indeed God calling him, but he still struggled with doubt.

2. The Second Test: The Fleece (First Request)

  • Scripture Reference: Judges 6:36-38
Before leading the Israelites into battle, Gideon sought further confirmation. He placed a wool fleece on the ground and asked God to make the fleece wet with dew while keeping the ground dry. The next morning, the fleece was soaked, and the ground was dry.

This act confirmed God’s presence but didn’t completely ease Gideon’s uncertainty.

3. The Third Test: The Fleece (Second Request)

  • Scripture Reference: Judges 6:39-40
Despite the first fleece test, Gideon sought additional confirmation. This time, he asked for the reverse: for the fleece to remain dry while the ground was covered with dew. God graciously fulfilled this request, further demonstrating His patience and willingness to reassure Gideon.

Lessons from Gideon’s Tests

  1. God’s Patience: God responded to Gideon’s doubts with grace, showing that He understands human frailty and desires to build our faith.
  2. Faith Through Assurance: While Gideon initially hesitated, these tests strengthened his trust, enabling him to obey God’s call boldly.
  3. God’s Sovereignty: The repeated confirmations highlight that God is in control and willing to meet us where we are to accomplish His purposes.

Application for Today

Just as Gideon sought confirmation, believers today often seek signs or clarity when facing significant decisions. While testing God repeatedly is not encouraged (see Deuteronomy 6:16), Gideon’s story reminds us that God is patient with our doubts and willing to guide us when we earnestly seek His will.
